Work and Life Balance

Are you the type who rarely have time going out on weekends because you’re busy working? Do you spend long hours at work that when you get home you go directly to bed without even changing your clothes? Is it difficult for you to find time for your family because of your job? Some of us have jobs that demand a lot of our time and effort but is it fair that we forget about all the other aspects of our lives just to comply with what is expected from us at work? Besides being employees, we are also human beings that need time for ourselves, families, and friends. Your boss is not the only person who needs you, your wife/husband needs you, your children need you, your parents need you and so are your friends. You also need to have time for yourself, you need to relax and pamper yourself sometimes because you deserve it. If you feel that you are neglecting other important aspects in your life, it will make you feel stressed and unhappy. You might be earning enough to support your family or yourself, but are you really happy spending most of your time working? Here are some of the ways you could pursue a balanced life:

  • Work smarter

There’s nothing wrong about working hard, but working too much might not be healthy for you. If you’re supposed to work for 8 hours a day only, then finish your job for the day on or before that 8 hours is up. You will be able to finish your work on time if you work smart. Do not waste time on unimportant things during your 8 hour shift. Learn to strategize, finish difficult tasks first before you work on the lighter load.

  • Learn to say no

If your boss requests something from you outside of your work schedule, you can always say no. I understand that it’s hard to do especially if you’re aiming for a promotion and you ‘d like to impress your boss, but making yourself available to your boss 24/7 will make them abusive. They will get used to the fact that they can rely on you whenever, wherever. It is not a bad thing to let your boss know that you have commitment outside work that you need to attend to and you can’t satisfy their request. They will understand that.

  • Refrain from checking your email

When it is your day off, refrain from checking your email or work related messages. You don’t need to talk to your co-worker about work when you are not in the office. You can ignore emails that are sent on a Sunday because they can’t expect you to respond to that while you’re having lunch outside with your family.

  • Forget about perfection

Always remember that nothing in this world is perfect. Do not overwork just to achieve perfection. When you know you have done your job right, that’s it, you stop at that. Do not spend any more time perfecting a task that has been done right.

  • Exercise and meditate

This will help you relieve stress from your body. Exercise is not just essential for your physical health but to your mental health too. It refreshes your outlook in life and clears your head. Take time to meditate too to reflect on the things that are going on in your life. When you meditate, you’ll think about your priorities in life and which includes making time for yourself and your family.

Why Setting of Goals is Important

A goal is like a roadmap that guides you to where you are going which is often times – success. It is a plan of what you want to do and what you want to be in the future. You set your goal and you work hard to achieve it.  Every successful person follows a goal in their lives. I understand that it’s already a cliché to hear how important setting of goals is but understanding what a goal is and how you can set one for yourself is truly important in achieving your dreams in life. You might’ve already tried setting goals but did not succeed and you might think that setting another one is useless and wouldn’t help you achieve anything. Well, here are some of the reasons why setting a goal is still important:

  1. It keeps you focused

If you have set a goal for yourself, you know exactly what you are trying to achieve. You don’t waste time figuring how and where to start. A goal keeps you focused on where you are going, it leads you to the right path.  You are not going to question your next steps because you know exactly what to do next.

  1. Goals turn your dream into reality

Proper setting of goals could lead to achievement of one’s dream. You may feel like you are aiming for a star, if you will actually take one step at a time and follow specific goals you set in achieving your dream, you will realize that your star is within reach. Set short term goals first so that it will be easier for you to create plans for your future.

  1. It helps you figure out what you want in life

Sometimes we set goals that don’t really give what we want. Setting goals help you identify what you truly want to happen in your life. If you don’t have goals, you’ll be stuck on that same circle you are running around trying to figure out what you really want

  1. Goals make you feel more motivated

Having figured out what you want to do, it gives you more energy to work hard to do it. When you anticipate something good to happen, you will be more inspired to pursue it. It makes you realize your purpose and you use that as your aspiration.

  1. You can measure your progress

If you have written goals, it is easier for you to keep track of your progress. You will easily see if a goal is met or not. It makes it easier for you to think of different ways of achieving certain goals. Setting of goals makes you see how near or far you are in achieving your dream.

Resolving Conflicts at Work

Conflict is part of everyone’s life. No matter how nice we are, there are things that we could not control that may lead to conflict with other people. Differences in values and beliefs may cause conflict and that happens everywhere, especially at work. Some people feel demotivated going to work just because they have people they are not in good terms with. Subordinates refuse to follow their team leader because of his management style. There are a lot of reasons why conflict happens but one thing I’m sure of is that it is not a good feeling when you go to work with a heavy heart. As a team leader, it is your responsibility to handle conflicts within your team members. To help you out in resolving conflicts at work, here are some of the steps that you could take:

  1. Speak out

If you know there is a conflict within your team or you know some of your members do not agree with your leadership style, you should be the one to speak out about it. You should also listen when it is your team members’ time to speak. Listen to both parties and do not take sides.

  1. Do not delay confrontation

It is better that you deal with the conflict sooner than later. If a conflict arises and it has not done too much damage yet, it is easier to resolve than when other people have already been involved. Remember that a conflict affects employee’s performance so if you don’t resolve issues right away, their productivity will be affected.

  1. Promote Teamwork

This will make employees realize the importance of teamwork. Remind them that all of you should work together to achieve success. Create an environment where team members are encouraged to show their skills and perform at their best.

  1. Give kudos

Acknowledge a good performance by your employees. Let them feel they are valued and you appreciate their effort at work. This will make them feel motivated and instead of them looking at other’s performance, they will focus on their own.

  1. Brainstorming

Gather your group and let them suggest ideas on how to resolve the conflict. Discuss all the options that will be given and let the majority decide.

Getting Over a Business Failure

Failure should be look at as an opportunity to be better. Though it is something that every one of us tries to avoid to happen, we might as well use it as a stepping stone to achieve success. We were not born perfect, all of us have flaws and shortcomings that hinder us from becoming successful, and there are outside factors too that we don’t have any control of. We can get over some failures in our lives easily, but there are those that are totally heartbreaking and we don’t know how to get back on our feet when they happen – like a business failure. You were finally able to start your dream business, it went fine for a couple of months or years but then a lot of circumstances happened and next thing you knew, your business was going down. Then finally, you made the hardest decision of your life to close the business. You invested almost everything in that business and not being able to make it to work left you miserable. You don’t know how and where to start again. Will you start applying for a new job or will you borrow money from your parents to try another business? You will be full of regrets for the wrong business decisions you’ve made. You’ll have sleepless nights and you’ll probably waste your time thinking of what might have been over a bottle of whiskey. It may be painful emotionally, mentally and financially to experience a business failure, but it is not the end of the world. It is one of those moments that we will learn to be smarter and stronger. Instead of you crying over it, try to look at the brighter side and learn from your mistakes. Trying another business is surely an option for you, you just have to believe in yourself and use your past experiences to handle your new business more effectively.

I know it is easier said than done, but here are some of the tips I’d like to share that could help you in getting over a business failure:

  1. Accept failure

In any type of moving on, acceptance is one of the first things that you should do. Accepting that your business did not succeed will clear your head and will let you think about your next steps. Know that some of the most successful business people have experienced business failure too. They did not give up and so should you.

  1. Learn and adapt

Once you’ve accepted that you failed, you will then think of the things that went wrong. What are those decisions that you made that led to failure? What could you have done instead to make the business grow? You will learn from your own experience and you should adapt to the change of situation.

  1. Reflect

Reflection allows you to think about what happened and why did it happen. It also gives you the chance to know yourself better. It is important that you’re able to identify your strengths and weaknesses so that you’ll be ready to embark on a new business journey.

  1. Create new action plan

Once you’ve identified the problems and found solutions to them, you could create an action plan to guide you in starting again. Documenting your plan will help you navigate it and you can make changes when necessary.

  1. Ignore other people

Sometimes we are afraid to fail because we are afraid to be judged by other people. Admit it, sometimes we live to impress other people and we are affected by what they say. If you hear negative comments from them about what happened, better ignore them. Actually, why not use it as a motivation to try to start over again? Prove to them that one failure will not stop you from becoming a successful businessman.

  1. Start again

You could try to go back to what you were doing before starting your own business but is that really going to make you genuinely happy? You left your job and started your own business because that’s what you wanted to do in life. It does not matter if you did not succeed the first time. Life isn’t about who finishes first. Your journey is more worth it if you are faced with challenges and you’re able to overcome them.

Why it is a good idea to systematize all businesses

It is a must for a business to have a solid system to avoid chaos. When you don’t have anything to follow, you’ll be all over the place and your business will surely go down. As a business owner, you should implement organization and processes that your employees need to follow. You need to set rules and be clear on assigning tasks to each of your employee. Once you systemize your business, you have to make sure that everyone consistently follows and be sure to remind them if there’s anything that changes or updates. Follow a system that has been proven to be effective. Lack of process could lead to one bad thing and another. It will affect the overall performance of your business. Systemization should be implemented and everyone from the owner down to the last employee should follow the system. Documenting the process will help you decide the type of system that you like to create.

Here are the reasons why it is a good idea to systemize your business:

  • Control

A business owner is more in control of their business if they have a system to follow. They know exactly what to do and how they will use their authority over their employees.

  • Efficiency

Your business will keep getting better at what it does when you have an effective system. There will be mishaps along the way but business growth is more attainable if you follow a certain process.

  • Time

When you know your day to day agenda, you will not have any time to waste and you will be able to finish your job faster.

  • Effective manpower

If you delegate the everyday tasks to your employees based on their skills, they will be able to deliver what is expected from them. Systems also enable people to achieve much more than they could alone, making them more efficient and effective.

  • Consistency

If you stick to a system and every one follows it, you will be able to deliver great results every time.

  • Reduce cost

A system allows for fewer mistakes. If you have systemization within your business, you are able to identify past mistakes and find ways to not do them again. Instead of you wasting time and money finishing a certain business activity, you’ll be able to finish it on time and with quality.

  • Increase profit

When your business increases its performance and productivity, the end result will be an increase in profitability. You’re able to reduce costs and deliver more to your customers so you gain more money.

Solo vs. Partnership

Solo vs Partnership

One of the questions that will come up to your mind when you’re planning to start a business is whether you’ll go solo or with partner/s. If you’ve come up with a business idea with someone, chances r you start the business with that person as your business partner but if the idea is yours alone, you don’t imagine running the business with someone else. You might like the idea of having full control of your business having a partner might be beneficial for your business as you have someone who can provide more ideas on running the business. Deciding whether to start a business solo or with a partner will depend on a lot of factors. I outlined some advantages and disadvantages of running a business solo and with partner/s.

  • You’ll have the simplest organization structure that will be easier to manage
  • All business decisions are yours so you will not have anyone to be in conflict with
  • You receive all the profits
  • It gives you an opportunity to learn more as you will face every business challenge alone
  • Going solo gives you a freedom to run your business the way you want to
  • Credit of your success goes to you alone

  • You are liable to all business debts
  • If your business goes down, you’re the one to take responsibility for it
  • You may not know everything about business but you have to do it
  • You need to work double and spend late nights at work. This means no vacation for you
  • No one will support your idea and no one will give you suggestions and second opinions
  • Capital might be limited since you are the only source for it

  • They say two heads are better than one and it is true almost all the time
  • Partners will provide more capital letting you start your business sooner and you could support all business needs
  • Shared responsibilities and liabilities
  • There will be people to discuss ideas with and they can use their connections for the success of your business
  • Two or more people will provide a diversity of skills and talent

  • Emotional ties might affect business relationship and the business itself
  • You may have to deal with each other’s differences and it might not work for your business
  • Shared profit
  • Decision making may lead to conflicts if your ideas and beliefs are different

You will need to wait for what your partner have to say before you go with a decision and you might not always feel comfortable with that

Managing Your Money

Managing Your Money

Does it bother you that you are working for several years now and you still have not invested in anything valuable yet? Where did all your earnings go? Are you the type who earn then spend? Do you still have problem paying off your bills despite having double jobs?  It is easy to say that you’ll save up for something but sometimes it’s hard to control your spending once you have the money on hand. You’ve been dreaming to get your own car but you can’t start saving to pay for the down payment because when you go to the mall on a payday, you find yourself impulsively buying stuff you hardly need. Now, discipline is very important in managing your money. I understand that it is a problem for a lot of people how they manage their personal finances and I’d like to share some of the tips on how can you manage your money.

  1. Set clear goal

If you have a goal, you have a guide on how you can get from point A to point B. Not having a clear goal in life is like being lost in the dark woods, you don’t have the slightest idea how can you go out. If you are still renting your house, set a goal to buy a house in 5-10 year time. Be committed to your goal and work hard to achieve it.

  1. Plan for the future

Anticipate what’s going to happen next. If you will get a car and you know you are able to pay for the down payment, think about the two year term you have to pay the remaining balance for you to finally own the car. Will you be able to pay the monthly dues? If not, then do not get the car just yet. If you will spend all your money on an item, think about the things that you might need to spend on afterwards.

  1. Stick to your budget

If you set a budget on anything you’d spend on, you will be able to control how you spend your money. This is a guide for you to not spend more than what you earn. It will help you to only spend on important things and avoid those that are not important.

  1. Pay off your debt

Prioritize your debt. Often times, loans have penalty if you’re not able to pay on time. Instead of you moving forward, paying your debt late will only make it bigger and the time you spend paying it become longer. Think of ways on how you can pay your debt as soon as possible. You can do a garage sale for things that you won that you don’t necessarily need anymore which other people can still use.

  1. Look for areas to cut your budget

If you have a set budget of $50 for personal items, see if you could cut it down to $40 while still being able to buy all your necessities. Try to look for cheaper products but still effective. Save the amount that you’re able to cut or spend it on more important things like paying your debt.

  1. Setup up an emergency fund

You may not always have a job. Always make sure that you have enough savings to sustain you without any income for at least 6 months. This will relief you from any stress during your job hunt/sudden illness that disallow you to work for a period of time.

Life as a New Boss

Life as a New Boss

Promotion is what every employee aims for. After putting in long hours of work, enduring hardships that your job gives you, finally you’ve been promoted as a new manager. Does that make you happy and proud? Of course it does. But, aside from taking pride in being called boss and being look up to by your former peers, you understand that it is a big responsibility to be the new manager. The pressure doubled and the time you need to spend working doubled too. You will start questioning yourself if you really deserve the title and if you could really meet the expectations set upon you. Are you that capable of making an important decision? Because as soon as you sit as a new manager, you will be making one right away. And how can you transition your relationship from being a co-worker to a boss? Will everyone give you the respect you deserve? A lot other questions may run into your mind but try to relax. Remember that you’ve been given that role because the people who made that happen believe that you are ready to take that big responsibility. If they believe in you, better start believing in yourself too. Your promotion did not happen overnight, you worked hard for it for months or even years. You totally deserve it and you should start waking up the boss in you.

Here are some of the best practices to get you started as a new manager:

  1. Establish Authority

It might feel awkward at first but you should start embracing the fact that you are now a manager and no longer a team member. Your former peers, they are your team member and you should let them realize that you are the new person they will report to. Do not abuse your newly acquired authority though. Do not use it to power trip or to get even with former co-workers that had done bad things to you in the past.

  1. Build strong relationship

It’s okay to still be friends with your former peers. Let them feel that even though you are their boss, you are that same humble and kind co-worker they used to have lunch breaks with. Communication is of the key to having harmonious relationship. Talk to your team members and be open to their suggestions. Get their cooperation so that you will not have a problem managing them.

  1. Set expectations and goals

It is important that you are on the same page as everybody you work with. Set realistic expectations and discuss ways on how your team will meet those.

  1. Acknowledge good performance

You’ve been an employee before and you know how good it feels when you’re given recognition whenever you’ve done a great job. It will surely promote a positive environment within your team. Be sincere when you give kudos.

  1. Be a Model

You can start by not being late at work. Be someone who your members can look up to. Be an inspiration to them. Show them how you give your best at work so that they can give theirs as well.

Improving Your Word of Mouth Referral

Improving Your Word of Mouth Referral

It is a human nature to rely on testimonials of other people when choosing a product or service. People trust referrals from family and friends than advertisements and other types of referral. Businesses should treat word of mouth marketing seriously because your customers can be your sales force. Word of mouth is also essential in the growth of your business when you’re a start-up. Someone will take interest in buying your product or service because another person said they should try it and this happens a lot. So how will you increase your word of mouth referral? Here are some of the ways to do so:

  • Ask for referrals

Asking for your current customers to help you spread words about how good your business is proves to be one of the most effective ways in increasing word of mouth referral. If they feel like your product or service could really help others, they’d happily refer you to their family and friends.

  • Use social media

Social media is a place where people find information fast. It is also where 2 million people are on. Using social media to encourage people to talk about your business will help you in reaching more people. If they see a post of a friend on Facebook about your product, they will be intrigued by it and chances are, they will try your product too.

  • Connect to the human emotion

Capturing the hearts of your audience is one effective way for your business to be known. If you facilitate a campaign in helping a cancer patient by donating part of you profit to support his medication and hospitalization, people will only say good things about your business. And people will keep talking about it until you establish your name on the market.

  • Build a community

You should bring your customers together with other customers. You could use social media platforms to create a group or create a chatroom on your website where people can talk to and share their experience with your service.

  • Invest in customer experience

There is no strategy better than delivering exceptional customer service. If you satisfy all your customers, how they can say anything bad about your business? They can only talk about how good their experience is and happy customers will surely influence other people to try your service.

How to Score 5 Star Reviews

How to Score 5 Star Reviews

As a business owner, what people say about your products/services is what matters the most to you. Testimonials of people who have used your services and products have great impact on potential buyers. That is why it is extremely important that you deliver exceptional service so that people will have good things to say about your business. Building a relationship with consumers is also important as it will promote loyalty. Reviews are important because most potential buyers depend on the star ratings that your business has. So how will you score 5 out of 5 star rating?

Here are some of the tips I have to help you score a 5 star review:

  1. Focus on your loyal customers

It will be easier for you to get a 5 from people who already love your products/services.

  1. Do not be pushy when asking for reviews

You don’t know what an attitude a person has. Being pushy irritates people most of the time and you don’t want that happening. Just do your best in delivering good customer service and if they appreciate it, they will surely leave a good review.

  1. Proactively ask for reviews

You might not want to do this but this is one of the most effective ways in getting good reviews. But then again, just don’t be pushy. Choose customers who you know love your service. You can ask for a review by sending your loyal customers email, you can also write a blog about it or conduct a podcast.

  1. Turn negative review into positive

Do not let one negative review affect the whole reputation of your business. You need to get as much positive reviews as possible to cover the negative ones. You could also try reaching out to customers who find your service horrible to learn what went wrong and you could avoid that in the future. How you respond to a negative review will reflect on the kind of business you are. You can actually win back the unhappy customers (and even potential customers who read the bad review) so deal with it as professionally as you can.

  1. Take the opportunity to ask “How can we make your experience better?”

Reviews answering this question will let you discover your business’ weaknesses based on customers’ perception. You’ll then have the opportunity to improve your service.
